Is a self-drive boat difficult to operate?
Our electric self-drive boats are simple to control and designed for beginners, so operating one feels less intimidating than many guests expect.
When you arrive, a Melbourne Boat Hire team member will show the nominated driver how to steer, control the speed and respond to other river users. The briefing also covers the route, key safety rules, and what to do if you need assistance.
Listen carefully and ask questions. By the time you leave the dock, the driver should understand the controls and feel comfortable taking charge.
The nominated driver must be at least 21 years old and remain alcohol-free while operating the boat.
What happens when you arrive?
All self-drive hires depart from Melbourne Boat Hire’s Docklands location at 45 NewQuay Promenade, between Cargo and Berth restaurants.
Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your booked departure time. This allows time for check-in, the safety briefing and boarding without reducing your time on the river.
A $500 security bond is required at the beginning of the hire and is refunded following the boat’s safe and timely return, subject to the hire terms. Review the booking conditions in advance so the driver understands their responsibilities.
Once your group is aboard and the briefing is complete, you will leave Docklands and follow the designated Yarra River cruising route the team explains.
Choose a boat that suits your group.
Melbourne Boat Hire’s self-drive fleet includes options for up to 10 or 12 passengers. Every boat is electric-powered, giving you a quiet cruise without engine fumes competing with your conversation.
The right boat depends on your group size, preferred hire length and how much weather protection you want.

- Peter A: up to 10 passengers, with a roof for shade
- Harvey A: up to 10 passengers, with a roof, optional side protection, Bluetooth audio, fridge and esky

- Felix G: up to 12 passengers, with the same larger-boat comforts as Eliza J
Two-hour hires are available across the fleet, while selected vessels also offer four-hour options. A two-hour cruise is a comfortable introduction for first-time drivers. Four hours gives your group more time to settle in, enjoy food and make a longer occasion of the day.
What should you bring onboard?
Think of the boat as your own moving picnic table on the river. A little preparation makes the experience easier.
Useful items include:
- Food that is easy to serve and eat while seated
- Chilled drinks and drinking water
- Reusable cups, plates and utensils if your menu requires them
- A warm layer, even on a sunny Melbourne day
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats
- A phone with your playlist downloaded

- A rubbish bag or container for leftovers
BYO food and drinks are welcome on self-drive hires, or you can add an available food and beverage package. BBQs and gas cookers are not permitted onboard.
Keep the menu simple. Grazing boxes, sandwiches, wraps, fruit, and individually portioned treats are easier to manage than meals that require preparation. Avoid bringing more food, bags and decorations than the group can comfortably store.
Can passengers drink alcohol?
Moderate alcohol consumption is permitted for passengers, but the nominated driver must not consume alcohol while responsible for the boat.
Choose the driver before the day and make sure everyone understands their role. The driver must stay attentive to the route, conditions, and other river users for the entire hire.
For groups wanting every guest to drink or completely switch off, a private skippered cruise may be the better option.
What happens if Melbourne’s weather changes?
Spring is a wonderful time to return to the river, but Melbourne weather can change quickly. Check the forecast and select your vessel accordingly.
Peter A provides overhead shade, while Harvey A, Eliza J and Felix G offer greater protection with roofs and side covers. Edgar J provides a more open-air experience suited to favourable conditions.
Light rain does not necessarily end the day when you have chosen a covered vessel and dressed appropriately. In severe weather, Melbourne Boat Hire may reschedule or refund in accordance with the applicable conditions.
Do not rely on the morning temperature alone. Bring a jacket and choose layers, especially for late-afternoon bookings when conditions can cool quickly.
Can you stop somewhere during the cruise?
Self-drive hires operate as continuous cruises. You cannot stop at another landing, restaurant or riverbank along the way.
Bring everything you want onboard before departure and use the toilet before boarding if your selected vessel does not have one. Eliza J and Felix G include onboard toilets; the other self-drive boats do not.
