Skippered and Self-Drive Boat Cruises to see Lighthouse Docklands
Light House is Melbourne’s first real-time weather display. Located at 888 Collins Street which is at the junction of Bourke and Collins Streets, the state-of-the-art lighting installation which is the design of Bruce Ramus, a Canadian-born, Melbourne-based lighting designer, illuminates a 15-storey residential building façade, forecasting the weather and displaying how the weather feels in a visually spectacular manner each night – 7 days a week.
The Light House is programmed to run from dusk until midnight each night. For five minutes on the hour, every hour, a link to the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather station provides a data feed that allow the lights to forecast the following day’s weather in a literal interpretation, where moving lights will reflect conditions such as rain, clouds, wind or sunshine. For the remainder of each hour, a weather station located on the roof of the building provides data to create abstract light movements reflecting the way the weather ‘feels’ at the time and is constantly but gently changing. From midnight until dawn the feature goes into a static phase that reflects the moon patterns.
The Light House offers a spectacular vison at night and is can be clearly viewed whilst cruising past on our boats on the Yarra River. For five evenings this winter, the Light House will have a festival light display in celebration of Winter Solstice. The family friendly show will run for 10 minutes each hour from sunset until midnight.
