Coxswain - Skippered Cruises and Small Vessel Operations

Employment Type: Casual / Part-Time (with potential for Full-Time)
Melbourne Boat Hire seeks a qualified and motivated Coxswain to join our experienced team. This hands-on role involves skippering our smaller luxury vessels, including Pia Mae, Sunny B, and Lady M, delivering unforgettable cruise experiences on Melbourne’s iconic Yarra River.
The ideal candidate will be customer-focused, safety-conscious, and have a keen eye for detail and presentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Skipper a variety of small vessels , including Pia Mae, Sunny B, and Lady M for:
- Private dinner cruises for two
- Wine and cheese cruises
- Sunset and sightseeing cruises
- Hens parties, birthdays, and corporate functions on Lady M
- Prepare vessels pre-charter , including cleaning, setup, and loading of catering or beverages
- Ensure vessels are always presented in pristine condition, before and after use
- Assist with ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the fleet
- Support commercial boat hire projects , including:
- Floating modular dock deployments
- Bridge inspections
- Ensure compliance with AMSA requirements, including:
- Maintaining and inspecting onboard safety equipment
- Conducting and recording monthly emergency drills
- Assist with inventory checks and supply management in the office as needed
Requirements:
- Current Coxswain Certificate of Competency (Grade 1 or 2)
- Proven experience operating small commercial vessels
- Sound understanding of AMSA regulations and marine safety protocols
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Strong work ethic with attention to detail and vessel presentation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays
- Comfortable performing hands-on tasks such as cleaning and manual handling
